Christmas Greetings 2013

Christmas is two days away.  You have been keeping us very busy at the store this last month, and we’re looking at lots of empty spots on the walls and shelves.  We want to report that your ornament donations (from the last post) today comes to $800+ 🙂  Great job!  We knew that our customers are generous, and it shows!  There are still some ornaments on the display, and we will continue to accept donations thru the end of December.  It would be great to surpass $1,000!  Donations will be divided between the Hanover Red Cross and New Hope Ministries.  We close early tomorrow – Christmas Eve – but open at 7:00 Thursday morning!

Merry Christmas!

Share the JOY

For several years at Christmas time, we’ve offered a variety of ornaments to our customers for a cash donation that we passed on to our local Red Cross.  This year, we have a tree display with lots of ornaments that are available with a donation that we will divide between our Red Cross and New Hope Ministries which has a food bank in the basement of the Red Cross building here in town.  100% of your donation will go to these two organizations before the end of December.  At this point, you have donated a total of $198.  We hope to multiply that amount in the next two weeks.  Stop by and pick out several ornaments – for a great cause!

‘FOMO’

I don’t text.  Once in awhile a text arrives on my cell phone, I read it, but I don’t text back.  My phone doesn’t take pictures either.  Some day when my phone dies,  I may have to go to something more technologically advanced than my old ‘flip phone’.  But for now, it does exactly what I want to do with it — make and receive phone calls.  Something else my phone doesn’t do — call someone by accident while being bumped around in the bottom of my handbag.

Because I don’t text, I don’t understand most of the texting lingo.  However, it’s fun to guess the meaning of groups of letters — language shortcuts — kinda like reading personalized license plates – the ones without vowels.

I read this (part of a longer article) in a recent online newsletter from John Tesh’s Intelligence for Life:

“Psychologists say, that it’s almost become culturally acceptable to text people at the dinner table – or check out the score of the game on an app while we’re with other people. They call that “FOMO” – fear of missing out. We feel compelled to keep checking our phones so we don’t miss out on anything.”

We all have various opinions about cell phone usage in public – talking, texting or checking an app – but, we know for sure that we don’t want our customers to worry about or fear missing out on great stuff that we have going on right here at A Bit of Country!  For example, right now we have to make room for new product coming in next month, so we have some really great prices on things we are clearing off our shelves!  Now that you know, don’t delay – you will miss out!

“Christmas in July” – snowmen and more from Blossom Bucket are priced at unheard of clearance prices.  And the best part . . . 50% of the sale of these pieces will go to the local Red Cross.  Make sure you come in before the end of July so there is no FOMO!

2014 wall calendars are soon arriving – Lang, Legacy, Crossroads and Kay Dee cloth calendars – and as always, if you purchase before the end of August, you get a discount.  Get your wall calendars (and wooden frames) early so you have peace of mind and no FOMO!

Fall Open House – second weekend in September from 12 thru 15. It’s become a tradition – bobbing for apples, give aways with purchase, sign up for other give away items.  Remember to bring some non-perishable food items for a discount on your purchase.  Come by one of these four days so you can relax with no FOMO!

If you’ve been traveling this summer, we’ve missed you.  But we have met lots of folks who end up here in Hanover from some pretty far away places . . . Maine, Florida, Arizona, California, Germany, England, Denmark, Australia and more that we might not even know about!  We hear all the time, ‘We don’t have any stores like this where we come from’.   We’re always glad to have visitors from out-of-town, close by or far away.

After our Fall Open House . . .

Thanks to all who participated in our Fall Open House last weekend!  We enjoyed seeing all of you, and it seemed all of you enjoyed yourselves also!

Saturday, Dale, our Embellish Your Story by Roeda™ company representative, shared information about the product, had a hands on demonstration and gave away magnetic embellishments.  She brought along a video loop showing a multitude of ways to use this magnetic product. We have given away a $25.00 gift certificate for EYS by Roeda to one of the participants who signed up on Saturday!  Congratulations!

In this last photo, the magnetic Nativity on the black board is new, and is available to purchase as separate pieces or as a whole collection.  Stop by the store or give us a call if you want more information about any of this product.

We’ve transported several boxes of non-perishable food items to the Red Cross Food Bank here in Hanover.  Thanks for your generosity – many of you brought in more than one item, and a few of you brought a bag full!  They will weigh your contributions and let us know how many pounds we had!

Customers who bobbed for apples won a free gift . . . candles, mini notepads, scented tea-lights, dip mixes, weekly memo pads!

We had many of you sign up for our giveaways.  We gave away a Bella Taylor quilted handbag, a Victorian Heart woven throw, a 1 year subscription to Country Sampler, a Cookbook full of Pennsylvania recipes,  a 2013 calendar, a lighted canvas print (more detail on this in the next blog), a store gift certificate, and a gift bag of soy candle products!  Whew . . .  congratulations!

CATCHING UP

We try to keep things up-to-date here, but really — we do a lot of ‘catching up’!  Over the last couple months we’ve been catching up with customers that we might see only a couple times a year.  Often, you are back in town over the November-December holidays and stop by to chat and ‘catch up’.  We always feel favored when long time friends come in to let us know what is going on these days . . . whether the news is good or not-so-good . . . the time shared always is good.

You’ve kept us busy this season of gift giving, and now is a time to catch up with important news we’ve not had time (or not taken time) to share.  This year was our third (maybe fourth – we can’t remember) year to decorate a tree with ornaments to be had for a $1.00 donation to our Area Red Cross.  This began as a way to ‘dispose’ of a collection of all sorts of ornaments – left overs from past years.  We place them on the tree with a note saying that any ornament on the tree is $1.00 and explain that the dollar is a donation.  Often you have bought 4 or 5 ornaments and told us to keep all of the $10 bill.  Sometimes you’ve shared that you have benefitted from help thru a Red Cross where you live . . . this makes it even more special to us that you all are so generous at this time of year!  When we took the final, lonely 7 ornaments off the tree last week and totaled the donations you have kindly given . . . we had $284.00 to give to the Hanover Red Cross.  And as has been our custom since we began this fundraiser, we matched that donation to send $568.00 to them.

As we are getting ready for inventory and packing away this years memories, we are looking over what we might be including on December 2012’s ‘dollar tree’ as it has fondly been called.   Whatever we pick, we are certain that you will be back to find the perfect ornament and support a great cause!
