The official start of fall is just over a month away — but towards the end of summer many of us look forward to cooler, less humid, more pleasant weather here in Pennsylvania. We look forward to the beautiful colors of our fall leaves and bright blue skies. We celebrate the harvest with pumpkins, gourds, flowers and an abundance of garden goodies.
Here, at the shop, we are getting ready for all that. While, of course, we still have our everyday great inventory of braided rugs, country style curtains, lamps and shades and more — we turn toward fall scents with our candles, fall colors with our wreaths and florals, fall themes with our flags, scarecrows, pumpkins and gourds.
Over the next couple of weeks, we will continue to introduce more fall treats into the shop. The second weekend in September, we will host our annual open house — Stop before then and often to see the day-to-day changes.

Battery Operated Candles — everybody loves ’em. In our almost 12 years in business, we’ve watched the evolution of BOCs. We first carried small, white, plastic, flickering LED ‘flame’, tealight size BOCs that used a flat disk shaped battery and came 50 pieces in a display box. We tentatively purchased one box and extra batteries, thinking it was a great idea, but not sure anyone else would think the same. We turned one on and sat it on the counter and sold out in about a week – with many customers buying 4 or five and more at a time!
Within a couple months, one of our vendors made available small, wax covered tealights and tapers in a very country/primitive look that our customers loved. The tapers needed only 1 or 2 AA batteries and were a really big hit. They still are, but the next step was putting a timer right into those little BOCs so they turn themselves off and on — and that made them an even bigger hit!
Currently, many different companies produce many different kinds of BOCs – most are wax covered to resemble (as close as possible) a real candle — some are made of resin and can be used outdoors with some water resistance — some are manufactured right in the candle holder and even lanterns, all as one piece.
One of the latest versions is the BOC with a moving flame. From across a room or even closer, it appears that you are looking at a real candle burning, complete with a flickering flame. It probably won’t be long before even these are improved on! In fact, two of our candle vendors have begun adding on layers of candle wax to give these flickering flame pillar candles a more country/primitive look!
Take a look at these videos of our newest BOCs displayed in the shop – made of wax, needing 2 AA batteries (120 hour operating time), 5 hour timer option, 5″, 7″ 9″ pillars and 7″, 9″ tapers!! A tiny LED shines on the ‘flame’ and makes it dance and flicker as a real flame would.
This weekend is our Open House and lots of you have been stopping by. The box of non-perishishable foods is getting filled up – those items will be carried over to the Food Bank at the Red Cross which is run by New Hope Ministries.
We’ve just gotten new things from handmadebyCheryl and Acorn Woods Designs. Stop by to see all our new fall things!
In just a bit over two weeks autumn will officially be here! Does anyone else wonder what happened to summer – those long hazy days of summers of our youth? I’m realizing that I mention how fast time is going by an awfully lot the last couple years. My body is slowing down so I don’t understand why the days are doing just the opposite!
Anyway, fall is on the way and we wanted to show you some bits of what we’ve been busy with in the store. It’s almost unanimous that fall is our favorite time to decorate – not necessarily with ghosts, witches, bats and the things of Halloween. But with the colors, pumpkins, florals, scarecrows, cooler weather and fallish scents of harvest. When you stop by here, these are some of this things you can expect to see:
If you noticed the 2014 calendars in the photos, it’s just a reminder that we do have a really good selection of calendars from Lang, Legacy and Crossroads.
