Holiday shopping has definitely begun! Right now, we are in the middle of York County’s Best Kept Secrets Holiday Highlights Tour — featuring 17 shops — 17 gems that are scattered throughout the county. Let us know if you are interested, we still have tickets!
Many folks are stopping in for the first time since we moved over a year ago. Our new location is great and some who just happen to be in the area are checking us out and liking what they see. Our local, faithful customers are also out shopping early for the best selections. We appreciate everyone who comes in to shop ~~ for the first time and our 13 year supporters.
We are known for our home decor – curtains, braided rugs, framed prints, candles (both real and battery operated) and more. But we also have a great selection of gifts starting at under $5.00. And, right now we have lots of holiday goodies filling our shelves (and trees)!

Battery Operated Candles — everybody loves ’em. In our almost 12 years in business, we’ve watched the evolution of BOCs. We first carried small, white, plastic, flickering LED ‘flame’, tealight size BOCs that used a flat disk shaped battery and came 50 pieces in a display box. We tentatively purchased one box and extra batteries, thinking it was a great idea, but not sure anyone else would think the same. We turned one on and sat it on the counter and sold out in about a week – with many customers buying 4 or five and more at a time!
Within a couple months, one of our vendors made available small, wax covered tealights and tapers in a very country/primitive look that our customers loved. The tapers needed only 1 or 2 AA batteries and were a really big hit. They still are, but the next step was putting a timer right into those little BOCs so they turn themselves off and on — and that made them an even bigger hit!
Currently, many different companies produce many different kinds of BOCs – most are wax covered to resemble (as close as possible) a real candle — some are made of resin and can be used outdoors with some water resistance — some are manufactured right in the candle holder and even lanterns, all as one piece.
One of the latest versions is the BOC with a moving flame. From across a room or even closer, it appears that you are looking at a real candle burning, complete with a flickering flame. It probably won’t be long before even these are improved on! In fact, two of our candle vendors have begun adding on layers of candle wax to give these flickering flame pillar candles a more country/primitive look!
Take a look at these videos of our newest BOCs displayed in the shop – made of wax, needing 2 AA batteries (120 hour operating time), 5 hour timer option, 5″, 7″ 9″ pillars and 7″, 9″ tapers!! A tiny LED shines on the ‘flame’ and makes it dance and flicker as a real flame would.
This past weekend, we participated in a Holiday Open House at a nearby model home. We had a great time decorating with a few things from the store on Saturday, then hanging out with other participating vendors on Sunday afternoon. We loved the house and the country setting, and though the party is over, the house is still available to tour. If you’re in the area – stop by and take a look!
Some photos from the day:
We decorated the windows with Tobacco Cloth prarie curtains, valances and a swag along with wreaths, and battery operated candles in tin holders with matching candle rings.
Plain greenery and added picks that match the wreaths look great on the fireplace mantle. A santa, another candle holder, stockings topped off with a beautiful glittered print finish the look.
A close up look at the mantle greenery:
We added an 8 foot alpine tree with lots of lights, a beautiful quilted throw on the couch and a battery operated lighted canvas above the couch. A great way to use wreaths – place them around the bottom of table lamps!
We can help you with these looks – stop in.
Most folks we talk with have a hard time with the fact that we’ve already finished the first 4 months of this year 2013. When you work in retail, the time goes especially fast, mostly because you are always thinking ahead — up to six months or more. It is a constant balance for us to look for new product that you all will love (like our lighted stretched canvas prints that we have trouble keeping in stock!); buying just the right amount of that product – not too much but not too little; and keeping everyone’s favorite items in stock.
For example, we sell lots of curtains and braided jute rugs from several companies and it is nearly impossible to keep all the different styles and sizes in-store at all times. We restock almost weekly for our most popular items, but we also accept many special orders. Fortunately, most of the time, we can order curtains and rugs from our suppliers and have those items within a short amount of time. We can also ship, or drop ship curtains, rugs, quilted bedding and other soft items if you don’t live nearby.
Our newest new-for-us product comes from Camille Beckman. We’ve handled their card inserts for quite some time – a bit of lotion in a foil packet inside a small folder that easily slips into a card. It makes that card you are mailing just a little more special. After a bit of research and reading lots of customer reviews, we decided that our customers would really enjoy Camille Beckman Glycerine Hand Therapy. We recently brought in 3 of the company’s most popular fragrances (Camille, French Vanilla, Tuscan Honey) in a variety of items. In addition, we still have the card inserts and purse size Hand Therapy fragrances. If you want to check out the huge variety of items and fragrances the company has developed, look here.
Mothers’ Day is coming quickly and we are stocked up on many gifts all those women in your life will love . . . music boxes, Willow Tree, gourmet coffees, embroidered lace, candles, wax melts and wax melters, nightlights, battery operated candles and lanterns, soaps & lotions, gift certificates and lots more. We can help you make up a gift bag or basket with several goodies.
Have you joined our rewards program and birthday club? Every day, people are benefitting from signing up.
Looking forward to seeing you soon!

How did it get to be November . . . and what happened to October?
Many of you may have been affected by the stormy weather along the east coast last week. Here in Hanover in southern Pennsylvania, we got much rain and wind . . . but most folks we’ve been talking to feel very lucky to have gotten off without even an electric blink. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of you who are dealing with the aftermath of Sandy.
We have been busy changing seasons in the store. Out with the fall (packing up a couple boxes of goodies till next year) and in with the winter and Christmas inventory. It almost seems like Christmas while we are reopening boxes that we got way-back-when in July!
So, while we have been digging thru boxes of beautiful product you will want to see . . . we managed to move some displays around. You will see the difference next time you stop by. In the meantime — here is a sneak peak inside!
We moved our cubby display to our candle area and are using it to show off our battery operated candles. While there are many, many Battery Candle designs out there – we have picked some we really like, and it seems our customers like them too! We may also use a few of these spaces here for our string lights (so we have room to display our boxed Christmas Cards where our string lights currently are!)
Just wanted to remind you that we have wooden calendar frames that hold our Lang, Legacy and Crossroads primitive calendars. During our 12 Days of Christmas Sale (that starts later this month) we will have a special that involves these calendar frames. Currently we have black, vintage red, saddle, honey walnut and oak frames. Our final order of Lang mugs and 2013 Lang calendars has just been sent in. We still have a nice selection of all our wall calendars – and we also have cloth calendars!
Our snowmen and snowladies are patiently waiting for you to come by!
By the way, while we are decorating for Christmas, we always keep an area with some fall florals, garlands and ‘turkey’ items for those of you who would like to pick up something to add to your Thanksgiving table!
Maybe the greatest invention since sliced bread . . . for those of us who love to decorate our homes with candles. Years ago, Battery Operated Candles (BOCs) operated with a regular type of light bulb — and lasted just a few hours. Remember leaving a flashlight on overnight and finding the batteries dead in the morning? Now, the new BOCs use LED lights — often flickering — and last m u c h l o n g e r. In fact some of the candles that we have, use 2 AA batteries, and advertise they will last up to 700 hours. That’s almost a whole month, if you leave them on 24/7 !
Really, any more there are almost as many choices with BOCs as there are real candles. There are shorter 4″ tapers (just big enough to hold 1 AA battery) and taller ones that hold 3 – 4. There are pillar type BOCs, 3″ – 6″ – 9″ and even taller that use C or D size batteries which last even longer than the AA types. The first BOC that we ever carried was a white plastic tealight size and we sold hundreds of them! We still sell lots of the tealight size wax coated BOCs. When you choose a BOC with a timer, the candle will auto turn off after a preset time (usually 5, 6, 8 hours) then come back on next day at the same time you first turned it on. The timer extends the life of the batteries.
Most of the BOCs of all styles and sizes are wax coated in different colors, some scented, some remotely controlled, some indoor/outdoor – giving us lots of choices to use in many different situations. We even found scented battery operated jar candles – with timers!
In the next couple weeks, we will be getting an assortment of ‘grungy’, scented pillar type BOCs that you will love! Don’t have photos of them – yet, but you will have to stop by to see them. For now, you can check out the ones we do have in stock.
FYI: We also sell some of the smaller disc (button size) batteries that fit the tealights and other smaller LED BOCs. And we recycle all the batteries we use here at the shop when they no longer work. Rather than throw your household batteries into the trash (not eco-friendly) bring them by the store the next time you stop in and you can add them to our box!
