Back in stock . . .

We have a few MERRY CHRISTMAS (lighted) Radiance canvas prints that came in this week.  This is our third order of this particular print, and sadly we were not able to get as many as we wanted.  Some of you who asked to be called upon delivery have been called, and we have just a few more to put out for sale.  Stop in soon if you want one!

Countdown to Autumn

In just a bit over two weeks autumn will officially be here!  Does anyone else wonder what happened to summer – those long hazy days of summers of our youth?  I’m realizing that I mention how fast time is going by an awfully lot the last couple years.  My body is slowing down so I don’t understand why the days are doing just the opposite!

Anyway, fall is on the way and we wanted to show you some bits of what we’ve been busy with in the store.  It’s almost unanimous that fall is our favorite time to decorate – not necessarily with ghosts, witches, bats and the things of Halloween.  But with the colors, pumpkins, florals, scarecrows, cooler weather and fallish scents of harvest.  When you stop by here, these are some of this things you can expect to see:

‘FOMO’

I don’t text.  Once in awhile a text arrives on my cell phone, I read it, but I don’t text back.  My phone doesn’t take pictures either.  Some day when my phone dies,  I may have to go to something more technologically advanced than my old ‘flip phone’.  But for now, it does exactly what I want to do with it — make and receive phone calls.  Something else my phone doesn’t do — call someone by accident while being bumped around in the bottom of my handbag.

Because I don’t text, I don’t understand most of the texting lingo.  However, it’s fun to guess the meaning of groups of letters — language shortcuts — kinda like reading personalized license plates – the ones without vowels.

I read this (part of a longer article) in a recent online newsletter from John Tesh’s Intelligence for Life:

“Psychologists say, that it’s almost become culturally acceptable to text people at the dinner table – or check out the score of the game on an app while we’re with other people. They call that “FOMO” – fear of missing out. We feel compelled to keep checking our phones so we don’t miss out on anything.”

We all have various opinions about cell phone usage in public – talking, texting or checking an app – but, we know for sure that we don’t want our customers to worry about or fear missing out on great stuff that we have going on right here at A Bit of Country!  For example, right now we have to make room for new product coming in next month, so we have some really great prices on things we are clearing off our shelves!  Now that you know, don’t delay – you will miss out!

“Christmas in July” - snowmen and more from Blossom Bucket are priced at unheard of clearance prices.  And the best part . . . 50% of the sale of these pieces will go to the local Red Cross.  Make sure you come in before the end of July so there is no FOMO!

2014 wall calendars are soon arriving – Lang, Legacy, Crossroads and Kay Dee cloth calendars – and as always, if you purchase before the end of August, you get a discount.  Get your wall calendars (and wooden frames) early so you have peace of mind and no FOMO!

Fall Open House – second weekend in September from 12 thru 15. It’s become a tradition – bobbing for apples, give aways with purchase, sign up for other give away items.  Remember to bring some non-perishable food items for a discount on your purchase.  Come by one of these four days so you can relax with no FOMO!

If you’ve been traveling this summer, we’ve missed you.  But we have met lots of folks who end up here in Hanover from some pretty far away places . . . Maine, Florida, Arizona, California, Germany, England, Denmark, Australia and more that we might not even know about!  We hear all the time, ‘We don’t have any stores like this where we come from’.   We’re always glad to have visitors from out-of-town, close by or far away.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013

Only a couple days late with this New Year’s wish!

Many folks may think that January brings alot of downtime when you have a small retail store.  Let me tell you that this is not so!  We might take a couple days after Christmas to recover from all the hustle and bustle of the previous weeks, and this year we had to take time to recover from whatever illness everyone seemed to be passing around.   But, the after-Christmas clearance time brings a different kind of busyness to our store.

Besides helping customers, we also use this time to reorganize and thoroughly clean everything front to back and top to bottom.  And, of course – there’s the inevitable inventory – probably our least favorite activity of the year . . . but it has to be done.  This really is the best time of the year to count product — because much of it has left the store!  Looking around at remaining inventory shows many empty spots . . . framed prints (many gone) . . . lighted stretched canvas prints (a couple left) . . . Lang, Legacy and Crossroads wall calendars (at last look – 3 left if you still need one) . . . boxed Legacy Christmas cards (very few boxes left – still on sale) . . . Willow Tree, Blossom Bucket, curtains and rugs (gone, gone, gone).

This year, besides doing all the above (and more), we’ve decided to move complete areas around – the first we’ve done this in several years.  What were we thinking?  We all know that you can’t move just one thing – even at home – you decide to move the TV and the recliner has to move, too. The floor lamp has to go next to the couch which no longer can stay along that wall . . . you know the routine.  Next thing – you’re buying new curtains to go with the new rug to go with the new coffee table!  It just never ends!

For those of you familiar with our store, you will immediately see what we have done - Boyds Bears have temporarily moved out so we could move our curtains and textiles to the front of the store.  Cards and other paper product have moved slightly  to the back to give them their own not-so-crowded space.  And, in that same area, we have more room to show off the magnetic Embellish Your Story by Roeda collection that we have.

Maybe some photos will help

It’s definitely a work-in-progress.  Those empty spots?  We’ll get them filled in just as soon as we can!  You’ll have to stop by and see what a difference it makes!

Welcome to November!

How did it get to be November . . . and what happened to October?

Many of you may have been affected by the stormy weather along the east coast last week.  Here in Hanover in southern Pennsylvania, we got much rain and wind .  .  . but most folks we’ve been talking to feel very lucky to have gotten off without even an electric blink.  Our hearts and prayers go out to all of you who are dealing with the aftermath of Sandy.

We have been busy changing seasons in the store.  Out with the fall (packing up a couple boxes of goodies till next year) and in with the winter and Christmas inventory.  It almost seems like Christmas while we are reopening boxes that we got way-back-when in July!

So, while we have been digging thru boxes of beautiful product you will want to see . . . we managed to move some displays around.  You will see the difference next time you stop by.  In the meantime — here is a sneak peak inside!

We moved our cubby display to our candle area and are using it to show off our battery operated candles.  While there are many, many Battery Candle designs out there – we have picked some we really like, and it seems our customers like them too!  We may also use a few of these spaces here for our string lights (so we have room to display our boxed Christmas Cards where our string lights currently are!)

Just wanted to remind you that we have wooden calendar frames that hold our Lang, Legacy and Crossroads primitive calendars.  During our 12 Days of Christmas Sale (that starts later this month) we will have a special that involves these calendar frames.  Currently we have black, vintage red, saddle, honey walnut and oak frames.  Our final order of  Lang mugs and 2013 Lang calendars has just been sent in.  We still have a nice selection of all our wall calendars – and we also have cloth calendars!

Our snowmen and snowladies are patiently waiting for you to come by!

By the way, while we are decorating for Christmas, we always keep an area with some fall florals, garlands and ‘turkey’ items for those of you who would like to pick up something to add to your Thanksgiving table!

After our Fall Open House . . .

Thanks to all who participated in our Fall Open House last weekend!  We enjoyed seeing all of you, and it seemed all of you enjoyed yourselves also!

Saturday, Dale, our Embellish Your Story by Roeda™ company representative, shared information about the product, had a hands on demonstration and gave away magnetic embellishments.  She brought along a video loop showing a multitude of ways to use this magnetic product. We have given away a $25.00 gift certificate for EYS by Roeda to one of the participants who signed up on Saturday!  Congratulations!

In this last photo, the magnetic Nativity on the black board is new, and is available to purchase as separate pieces or as a whole collection.  Stop by the store or give us a call if you want more information about any of this product.

We’ve transported several boxes of non-perishable food items to the Red Cross Food Bank here in Hanover.  Thanks for your generosity – many of you brought in more than one item, and a few of you brought a bag full!  They will weigh your contributions and let us know how many pounds we had!

Customers who bobbed for apples won a free gift . . . candles, mini notepads, scented tea-lights, dip mixes, weekly memo pads!

We had many of you sign up for our giveaways.  We gave away a Bella Taylor quilted handbag, a Victorian Heart woven throw, a 1 year subscription to Country Sampler, a Cookbook full of Pennsylvania recipes,  a 2013 calendar, a lighted canvas print (more detail on this in the next blog), a store gift certificate, and a gift bag of soy candle products!  Whew . . .  congratulations!

Other shots of the store on Saturday:
